Stocks plunge by 345.57 points on panic-selling
KARACHI, Sept 26: The share market on Monday plunged by three per cent on panic selling triggered by the prevailing tension and threat of operational steps by the US on some security issues.
What seemed to have further aggravated the situation was a tough stand taken by the government on the US allegations amid fears of an imminent US action, analyst said.
The benchmark suffered a massive single-session fall of 341.83 points at 11,265.03, eroding Rs87.489 billion from the market capital at Rs2,973 billion.
Leading base shares, notably National Bank, Pakistan Oilfields, OGDC, National Refinery, Attock Petroleum, Engro Corporation and some others were in the forefront of losers on active selling.
“Investors should be really worried over the rising tensions with the US on some issues linked to security”, analyst Faisal Abbas said, and added: “But those, who are well aware of the US threats, term it the re-election war of words between the Republicans and the Democrats for the next year`s elections”.
The bulk of selling was confined to oil sector and reflects the temporary exit of foreign investors, of course, after taking profits at the inflated levels owing to last couple of weeks` sustained rise, he said.
“As the media reports go an imminent showdown with the US is around”, said a leading stock analyst Ahsan Mehanti. “But some deeper analysis of the developing situation tells that the things will settle down in the coming weeks”.
He said it may well prove in the final analysis, a psychological depressant as the message from the Pakistan government is clear on the issue Haqqani network.Another leading analyst Samar Iqbal said opinions are, however, divided over the possible US action but investors, notably foreign ones, hastened to liquidate a part of their holdings at the available margins but there were buyers at the dips.
Leading losers were led by Unilever Pakistan and Nestle Pakistan, off Rs226.96 and 134.60, while Mari Gas and Indus Dyeing managed to finish with modest gains of Rs3.60 and 1.83.
Turnover figure was maintained at the weekend level of 79.813m shares but losers held a strong lead over the gainers at 205 to 43, with 84 shares holding on to the last levels.
The active list was topped by Fauji Fertiliser Bin Qasim, lower by Rs1.52 at Rs54.59 on 9m shares followed by Lotte Pakistan, easy by 71 paisa at 11.52 on 8m shares, Fatima Fertiliser, lower by 55 paisa at Rs17.22 also on 8m shares, J.S. & Co, easy 45 paisa at 5.43 on 7m shares, National Bank, off Rs2.28 at Rs43.76 on 5m shares, Azgard Nine, lower 49 paisa at 4.54 on 3m shares, and Hub-Power off 80 paisa at 40.67 on 2m shares.
They were followed by Nishat Mills, lower by Rs1.17 at 46.11 on 2m shares, Bank of Punjab, easy by 33 paisa at 5.80 also on 2m shares and Engro Corporation, sharply lower by Rs5.36 at 128.96 also on 2m shares.
FUTURE CONTRACTS: The notable feature of trading on this counter was large volumes in all the actives on heavy selling under the lead of Fauji Fertiliser and Bank AlFalah but all the sale offers were absorbed at the fall.
Fauji Fertiliser led the list of actives on this counter and was marked down by Rs1.39 at Rs54.71 on a large volume of 2.054m shares, but its October settlement fell by 99 paisa at 55.21, followed by Bank AlFalah, easy by 22 paisa at 10.38, on 2.002m shares, National Bank, sharply lower by Rs2.31 at Rs43 on 1.542m shares.

KSE-index loses 81 points
KARACHI: The share market finished the weekend session on an easy note on renewed selling in most of the pivotals under the lead of oil sector followed by reports of fresh US threat of operational steps against the Haqqani network.
The KSE 100-share index suffered a fresh decline of 83.37 points at 11,606.86 on selling triggered partly by US threats and partly to weekend selling at the inflated levels on the blue chip counters.
Investors were worried over the US blame game on the ISI but and a firm stand taken by the government on the threats seemed to have added a new psychological depressant in stock trading heading for a major breakthrough, said a leading
analyst.
“The new episode on ties with the US signaled the panic exit of foreign investors who hastened to take profits in the oil sector in the index heavy base shares, notably OGDC, Pakistan Oilfields, Pakistan Petroleum, National Bank and Engro Corporation”,
he added.
But all was not with the broader market as some of the leading shares as well current favourites such as Fatima Fertiliser, Fauji Fertiliser Bin Qasim and some others came in for active local support and limited the market fall, some others said.
They said reports of higher quarterly working results by some of the leading companies are expected to lure investors back in the market again by the next week on the strength of basic positive market fundamentals.
Leading gainers were led by Siemens Pakistan and Unilever Pakistan, up Rs22.07 and 119.26, while Nestle Pakistan and MCB topped the losers, falling by Rs50.45 to 6.59.
Turnover figure showed a modest fall at 79.298m shares from the previous 83m shares as losers held a modest lead over the gainers at 136 to 102, with 91 shares holding on to the last levels.
The active list was led by Fatima Fertiliser, up 59 paisa at Rs17.77 on 11m shares followed by Fauji Fertiliser Bin Qasim, higher by 68 paisa at Rs56.11 on 10m shares, J. S. & Co, lower 36 paisa at 5.88 also on 10m shares, Lotte Pakistan, easy by 24
paisa at 12.23 on 6m shares, National Bank, off Rs1.41 at Rs46.04 on 4m shares, Bank AlFalah, steady by four paisa at 10.57 on 3m shares, and D. G. Khan Cement, off 51 paisa at 20.39 on 3m shares .
They were followed by Hub Power, lower by 36 paisa at Rs41.47 on 2m shares, Azgard Nine, lower 11 paisa at 5.03 also on 2m shares and Engro Corporation, sharply lower by Rs3.81 at 134.32 on 2m shares.
FUTURE CONTRACTS: Fauji Fertiliser Bin Qasim again came in for active support on reports of higher earnings, and was quoted higher by 62 paisa at Rs56.20 on a large volume of 2.329m shares followed by National Bank, easy by Rs1.37 at 46.21 on 0.986m shares and Engro Corporation, off Rs3.94 at 134.63 on 0.514m shares.
They were followed by Pakistan Oilfields, lower by Rs3.65 at 370.31 but on the other hand PSO came in for active support and rose by Rs3.94 at 249.75 on 0.282m shares.
DEFAULTER COS: Ravi Textiles led the list of actives, lower by four paisa at 0.86 on 0.102m shares followed by Japan Power, steady by one paisa at 0.95 on 33,022 shares and Service Fabrics, off 28 paisa at 0.12 on 26,000 shares. Others also fell where changed on stray selling.

Stocks shed 161 points on profit-taking
KARACHI, Sept 22: The share market on Thursday failed to extend the overnight run-up as a section of investors took profits at the inflated levels on the blue chip counters but the underlying sentiment remained uppishly inclined.
The benchmark, however, shed a good part of the overnight gains as oil shares fell under the lead of OGDC as they rose a day earlier, off 1.43 per cent or 161.75 points at 11,690.23, eroding Rs42 billion from the market capital.
The market appears to be in a consolidation phase and after going through technical corrections, it is heading for a major breakthrough on the strength of positive news from the corporate fronts.
But some others said some of the depressants on the political front, notably divergent opinions about the existing relations with the US and its new demands on terror could take its toll in between.
“Could the market go alone to its pre-determined target, this is big question being debated among the leading analysts,” said a leading analyst and added,” it has to go alone with the political environments and strengthened by peace perceptions.”
The immediate reaction after a hefty rise reflects this perception as many are still not inclined to hold on to their long positions for obvious reasons, including the behavioral inconsistency in market stance, some others said.
The overnight massive gain attributed to the oil sector, notably the OGDC pave the way for the same group to cash in on the available profits and for good reasons, too, they added.
Leading gainers were led by Millat Tractors and Indus Dyeing, up by Rs7.77 and 4.53, while top losers, included Wyeth Pakistan and Bata Pakistan, off by Rs42 and 35.62.
Traded volume fell to 82.729m shares from the previous 117m shares as losers forced a strong lead over the gainers at 171, to 82, with 80 shares holding on to the last levels.
The active list was topped by J.S. & Co. firm by 52 paisa at Rs6.24 on 15m shares followed by National Bank, steady 28 paisa at 47.45 on 6m shares, Azgard Nine, firm by 12 paisa at 5.14 also on 6m shares, Lotte Pakistan, lower 39 paisa at 12.47 on 5m
shares, Sui Southern Gas, lower 85 paisa at 23.14 on 4m shares, Fauji fertilizer Bin Qasim, steady by 17 paisa at 55.43 also on 4m shares, and D. G. Khan Cement, easy 42 paisa at Rs20.90 on 2m shares.
They were followed by Nishat Mills, off 49 paisa at Rs48.08 on 2m shares, Hub-Power, lower 16 paisa at 41.83 on also 2m shares and Bank AlFalah, lower by 14 paisa at 10.53 on 2m shares.
FUTURE CONTRACTS: National Bank maintained its upward drive and was marked up by 20 paisa at 47.58 on 1.649m shares followed by Fauji fertilizer Bin Qasim, steady by eight paisa at Rs55.58 on 0.815m shares, and Engro Corporation, off Rs2.56 at Rs138.57 on 0.671m shares.
They were followed by Attock Refinery, off Rs2.30 at Rs111.17 on 0.389m shares and Nishat Mills, easy by 51 paisa at Rs48.24 on 0.351m shares.
DEFAULTER COS: Japan Power came in for active selling and fell by seven paisa at 0.94 on 0.313m shares followed by S.S. Oils, unchanged at Rs4.50 on 51,000 shares and Invest Bank, easy by four paisa at 0.26 on 42,626 shares. Others lacked normal interest and ended fractionally lower.
